DETROIT, Mich. -- Marygrove golf head coach Frank McAuliffe officially released the spring portion of his program's schedule Wednesday (March 26) as championship season looms. McAuliffe, despite being in his third year at the helm, will take his first full team into spring action a year after Marygrove entered their first golfer in a competition (2012-13). Still in its infancy, the McAuliffe aims to have a successful spring campaign both on the course and with key milestones for his program.
While competing on the course this season, McAuliffe is also charged with securing a home course for the program as well as recruiting for his team's second season of Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference (WHAC) play in 2014-15.
The 2014 spring slate begins April 4 & 5 when the Mustangs travel to Fort Wayne, Ind. to take part in the University of Saint Francis Invitational. The two-day, 36-hole event will be held at Fort Wayne's Brookwood Golf Club and will begin with a shotgun start at 12 p.m. on April 4. The team will return to Brookwood for the second round of 18 at 9 a.m. the following morning.
The Saint Francis Invite will be a tune-up for the team as they head into the two-day WHAC Championship Tournament on April 14 &15. Led by freshmen Michael Kanalas (Rives Junction, Mich./Jackson Northwest) and Tyler Newell (Livonia, Mich./Dearborn Divine Child), the Mustangs will compete against the conference field at Kentwood's Stonewater Country Club beginning at 9:30 a.m. on April 14. Davenport, this year's host after winning the fall team title, has listed shotgun starts of 9:30 a.m. for each day of competition in Kentwood.
The Mustangs will follow up the conference championship tournament with a trip to Cascades Golf Club in Spring Arbor for the 2014 Spring Arbor University Spring Invitational. The SAU Spring Invite will feature a 9 a.m. shotgun start.
Not listed on the schedule is the program's first team trip for 36-holes of golf in Michigan's northern golf scene. The team, along with coaches and administration, will head north for two fun rounds of golf to celebrate the 2013-14 year and discuss the upcoming 2014-15 slate and more.
"Assistant coach Ronnie Pollack, Jr. has been instrumental in forming our spring schedule," said McAuliffe in regards to the upcoming season."We have a great group of guys that we are eager to build of off with our 2014-15 class of recruits. This schedule, combined with the announcement of our home course, will provide the program with the energy needed to hit our goals heading into the Fall 2014 season."
