DETROIT, Mich. -- The Marygrove College women's volleyball program added another key piece to their future plans Wednesday (April 23) with the signing of Mt. Morris High School defensive specialist, Amber Kelly. Wednesday's signing marked the sixth of the 2014 class for head coach Jamie Baker and the Mustangs as they continue to build off of their record-breaking 2013 season.
Kelly, a 5-2 defensive specialist, finished the final two seasons of her high school career for the Panthers of Mt. Morris after playing two years at Flint's Hamady High School. During her time on the court for Mt. Morris, Kelly helped lead the Panthers to back-to-back Genesee Area Conference and MHSAA District championships. The talented defensive specialist earned the Panthers' Coaches Award for her work on-and-off the court during her junior campaign. Playing for a consistent winner at Mt. Morris, Kelly was on a team that fell one match shy of reaching the quarterfinals in 2012 after the Panthers advanced to the regional finals against perennial Class B power North Branch.
A well-rounded athlete, Kelly is finishing up her fourth season of track & field in the 100, 4x100 and 4x200m events. Showcasing her athleticism, Kelly – standing at five-foot-two – is an accomplished high jumper with a near five-foot mark.
COACH BAKER'S TAKE
"Amber will be a fantastic addition to our team," said Baker. "She comes from a highly competitive, well-respected program and has the tools to play right away in our system. Amber possesses the competitiveness needed to be a dynamic defensive player in the always tough Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference. Her personality and overall outlook is a great fit for our program. I am excited to add Amber and the rest of our 2014 commits to the Mustang Family."
