SYLVANIA, Ohio -- The 2014 Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference (WHAC) opener did not go according to the script for Marygrove volleyball (2-5, 0-1 WHAC) as the host Lourdes University Gray Wolves (4-5, 1-0 WHAC) won in straight sets, 3-0 (25-12, 25-16, 25-23), Wednesday (Sept. 3) in Sylvania, Ohio. The loss drops the Mustangs all-time record against the Gray Wolves to 0-11 overall and 0-4 in conference meetings, including playoffs.
The Mustangs current skid sits at five matches after opening the season 2-0 with wins at Cincinnati Clermont and Tennessee Temple.
Lourdes jumped out in front early behind a .370 hitting percentage to win the first set, 25-13, over a young Mustangs squad. Keyonna Gregory, a WHAC All-Conference First Team performer last season, was a catalyst early and often leading the Gray Wolves to 14-kill, five-error first set as a team. The Mustangs countered with five kills and an equal five errors in the opening frame.
The Mustangs would dig an 0-2 hole after dropping the second set by a 25-16 tally as the Gray Wolves continued to roll.
A furious comeback would bring the Mustangs back to within one point late in the third set, 24-23, before the Gray Wolves shut the door to take the WHAC opener in straight sets.
Sophomore outside hitter Ashley Murphy (Southfield, Mich./Livonia Clarenceville) had arguably her best match in a Marygrove uniform by slamming down a match-high10 kills (no errors) in 27 total attacks. The 10-kill night lifted Murphy to a team-leading .370 hitting percentage. Kara Kempinski (Livonia, Mich./Schoolcraft) anchored the team defensively with 14 digs, while Alixandria Pappas (St. Clair Shores, Mich./Lakeview) recorded three block assists in the conference setback.
Lourdes was led by Katie McKenty and Stephanie Richards with nine kills each. Gregory followed with five kills and no errors for a match-high .560 hitting percentage.
The Mustangs will have a week off before their home opener Wednesday (Sept. 10) when they play host to the Wolverines of the University of Michigan-Dearborn. The 7 p.m. tilt will also mark the first Marygrove volleyball match played at Detroit's Northwest Activities Center.
