DETROIT – A repeat of Saturday’s (Sept. 20) four-set victory over Concordia-Ann Arbor was not in the plans Wednesday (Sept. 24) as the visiting Cardinals raced past the Mustangs, 3-1, in the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference match held inside Detroit’s Northwest Activities Center. With the loss, the Mustangs drop to 4-10 on the season and 1-5 in the WHAC. Concordia moves to 7-8 overall and 2-4 in the WHAC after topping the Mustangs in four sets (7-25, 25-23, 16-25, 11-25).

The Mustangs – unable to match Concordia’s intensity with the visitors aimed to even the season score – received another big performance from Kiara Cobbs (Detroit, Mich./King High School) as the senior middle hitter continued her strong midseason run by posting a team-high 12 kills on a .421 hitting percentage. Junior middle hitter Alixandria Pappas (St. Clair Shores, Mich./Lakeview High School) followed Cobbs strong night with an eight-kill, two-block effort in the conference setback.

Concordia was paced once again by Autumn VanKirk with 15 kills and a .538 hitting percentage. VanKirk has posted 33 kills through two matches against the Mustangs this season. Alisha Anderson led the Cardinals in total attacks en route to posting 12 kills on a .276 hitting percentage.

The Mustangs now face a difficult road slate this weekend with Davenport and No. 9 Madonna awaiting the Green & Gold Friday and Saturday, respectively. The weekend WHAC action kicks off with a 7 p.m. opening serve Friday in Grand Rapids against Davenport – a team receiving votes in the latest NAIA Coaches Poll – and is followed by a 1 p.m. opening serve Saturday at Madonna.
