Women’s Soccer Faces Pair of Road Challenges This Week

WOMEN’S SOCCER – WEEKLY NOTES – WEEK NINE

DETROIT – First-year head coach Mario Scicluna and the Marygrove women’s soccer team will face a pair of tough opponents this week beginning with a road tilt at NCAA Division II Ursuline College (Ohio). The Mustangs will look to even the all-time series Wednesday (Oct.15) at 3:30 p.m. and relive their 2012 upset over the Arrows (10-3) – a win that remains the lone NCAA D2 win in Marygrove athletics history.

The Mustangs (2-10-1, 1-3-1 WHAC) will return to WHAC action Saturday (Oct. 18) when they visit Grand Rapids to take on Cornerstone University at 4:30 p.m. With only four conference games remaining, the Mustangs will be aiming to get positive results as they hold on to the WHAC’s eighth and final playoff spot.

THE LAST TIME THEY MET
Marygrove lost on the road to the Arrows of Ursuline College last season by a 3-1 final tally. Weeks later, the Mustangs fought hard in a 1-0 senior day defeat at the hands of the Cornerstone University Golden Eagles.

A LOOK AT URSULINE
The Arrows – a NCAA Division II program – are off to their best start since 2011, boasting a 10-3 mark heading into Wednesday’s game in Pepper Pike, Ohio. Paige Rowan and Vanessa Consiglio pace a potent Arrow attack with 15 and 10 goals, respectively. Consiglio is the Arrows’ points leader with 34 (10 goals, 14 assists).

A LOOK AT CORNERSTONE
The Golden Eagles are idle until Saturday after dropping a 1-0 contest to rival Aquinas over the weekend. Lexi Brisson-Fast leads a balanced Golden Eagles roster with nine goals and six assists.

AN UP-AND-DOWN WEEK
The Mustangs will be on the rebound this week after falling on senior day to Madonna, 5-0. Prior to the senior day defeat, the Mustangs topped Indiana Tech by a 2-1 margin to earn their first WHAC win since 2012. The win lifted the Mustangs conference points total to four as the team clings to playoff life in the eighth and final spot entering the week.

HOPPING IN OUR TIME MACHINE
This week’s matchup against Ursuline College takes us back to the first and only Marygrove win over a NCAA Division II program. On Sept. 22, 2012, the Mustangs upset Ursuline, 2-1, shocking the visiting Arrows to pick up the historic victory. The win was made possible by stellar defensive play from former defender  Jessica Niemi and keeper Kristen Jolly. Goals from Jessica McClendon and Kaitlyn Vigna sealed the one-goal victory  as the Mustangs sent the Arrows to their second defeat of the season.

YORK STANDS ALONE
Cheyenne York, one of five seniors recognized during Saturday’s (Oct. 11) Senior Day ceremony, will end her career atop nearly all offensive categories in the women’s soccer record book. To date, York has amassed 22 goals and 11 assists for a 55-point career. All three  marks are first in Marygrove women’s soccer history as the celebrated senior’s career begins to wind down.

PLAYOFFS? PLAYOFFS?
Thanks to a tie against Lawrence Tech and a win over Indiana Tech, the Mustangs are currently sole owners of eighth place in the WHAC. To qualify for WHAC postseason play, teams must finish in the top eight at the end of the conference’s nine-game slate. The Mustangs are currently hanging onto the final playoff spot with Lawrence Tech and Indiana Tech following closely behind. The win and tie earned the Mustangs four points, good for a three-point edge over Lawrence Tech  (1) and four-point advantage over Indiana Tech (0).
