WHAC RELEASE

DETROIT — Take a bow, Mr. Edwards! Marygrove baseball senior utility man James Edwards made history Monday (May 4) by becoming the first student-athlete to be named Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference (WHAC) and Pitcher of the Week in the same week. Several other players have won both awards in the same season, but Edwards becomes the first to grab both awards in one week, capping off his senior campaign in style after a dominating all-around performance in the Mustangs’ four-game set opposite Lourdes University.

Edwards (Detroit, Mich./Shaw University) was named Player and Pitcher of the Week following a vote of the league’s media relations professionals.

The weekly awards are also a first for any Marygrove baseball player as the program put a cap on its first season of play with a split against Lourdes over the weekend.

Edwards earned Player of the Week honors by making the most of his senior weekend at the plate. The senior went 8-for-15 (.533) at the plate over his final series, including a 3-for-5 performance with a walk-off RBI double on Friday (May 1) to open the four-game, season-ending series. All of Edwards’ three hits were doubles as the senior helped the Mustangs win the series opener in 11 innings, 4-3.

One day later, first-year head coach Ryan Kottke turned to Edwards on the mound in the season finale, the Mustangs lone senior hurler. Edwards capped off a stellar campaign for the Green and Gold by tossing a complete-game to receive the nod as Pitcher of the Week. The senior scattered five hits (one unearned run) over nine innings of work to get the win as the Mustangs walked-off Lourdes in the bottom of the ninth, ending season one in victorious fashion, 2-1.
