LIVONIA, Mich. — The balance and depth of the visiting Davenport University Panthers proved to be too much for Marygrove women’s volleyball on Friday (Sept. 25) as the visitors swept the Mustangs, 3-0, in Livonia, Mich. The match was played at Madonna University due to gym availability issues but was still considered a home game for the Mustangs (2-13, 0-7 WHAC).

Fourth-year head coach Jamie Baker and the Mustangs return home to Detroit Jesuit High School Saturday (Sept. 26) to face No. 15 Madonna at 1 p.m.

The Panthers (11-9, 5-2 WHAC) won set one, 25-16, despite a team match-low .143 hitting percentage and only 12 kills. Length at the net was the difference in set one as the Panthers returned three Mustang attacks for points off blocks. In all, the Panthers collected one block and four block assists in the opening frame, stymying a Mustang attack that had no player with more than one kill (five team kills).

Second set action saw the Panthers race out to their best start of the evening as the visitors took a 7-1 lead into the first timeout called by Baker and the Mustangs. The six-point lead was all the Panthers needed in a 25-14 set-two victory. The Panthers boasted a .423 hitting percentage in the second set behind 15 kills (three errors) on 28 total attacks.

The Mustangs countered with nine kills, six errors, on 29 attempts for a .103 hitting percentage in the set. Ashley Murphy (Southfield, Mich./Clarenceville High School) led the way for the Green and Gold in set two with four kills and a .300 hitting percentage. Amber Kelly (Mt. Morris, Mich./Mt. Morris High School) recorded a team-best 10 digs in set-two action.

Balance and depth on the Panthers’ side took over in set three as the visitors swept the WHAC match with 25-19 edging of the Mustangs in the third frame.

In all, the Panthers had six players tally four or more kills with Ashley VanderHorst pacing the pack behind 10 kills and a .421 hitting percentage. Balance was evident at the setter position for the Panthers as well as Sydney Tracer and Sami White recorded 18 and 16 assists, respectively.

Murphy led the Mustangs with eight kills while Alixandria Pappas (St. Clair Shores, Mich./Lakeview High School) and Skylar Zeigler (Canton, Mich./Belleville High School) followed with four kills each. Kelly led the dig department with 16, the long Mustang in double digits, while Amber Staudt (Novi, Mich./Schoolcraft College) checked in with nine of her own.
