DETROIT, Mich. -- Marygrove College head coach Worteh Sampson has announced the addition of Kayla Shaw and Sarah Monte to the 2017-18 incoming recruiting class. Shaw and Monte each play together for WAZA F.C and had the privilege to sign their National Letter-of-Intents to play for Marygrove College together next fall.
Kayla Shaw is a 5-foot-2 forward from Brighton, Michigan. Shaw currently attends Northville High School where she plays varsity soccer for the Mustangs. She is a student-athlete who excels in the classroom and on the field. Kayla has played travel ball for over 12 years with WAZA F.C., a team out of Livonia, Mich.
Shaw said in her interview, "I love that Marygrove is close to home. The campus is very pretty, and I love that the classes are very small that way I can know my professors closely.".
Sarah Monte is a 5-foot-5 1/2 forward from Livonia, Michigan. Monte currently attends Livonia Stevenson High School where she helped the Spartans to a City and District Championship. She is the place kicker for the LSHS football team and is the first girl to play football for the Spartans in over 50 years. Sarah is a part of the National Honor Society, proving her commitment to being a well-rounded student-athlete.
Monte said in her interview, "I want to thank my mom and my dad because they have stuck with me through everything. I also want to thank all of my friends and my head coach.".
Coach Worteh Sampson said about Shaw and Monte, "I am very excited about the additions of Kayla Shaw and Sara Monte. I've had the chance to watch both players in their training environment and I am very optimistic about what they will bring to our team next fall. Kayla is a hard working "blue collar" midfielder. She works tirelessly box to box on the field. I am certain she will come in and make an immediate impact. Sara is very technically gifted. She see's the field very well and has an excellent range of passing. She is physically a very strong player and is not easily knocked off the ball. Her brilliant left foot could be crucial on a set piece and dead ball situations.".
The women's soccer team's first game is at home, on Monday, August 21st, against Goshen College! Kick-off is set for 5:00 PM.
