DETROIT, Mich.-Birch Run, better known as the city with the world's 2nd largest outlet mall, was recently visited by Mustang Soccer for a key signing. Caleb Szukhent, a senior at Birch Run High School, signed a 2010-11 Letter of Intent with family and friends at his side.
Szukhent, a
6'2" forward, is the second Birch Run student-athlete in as many years to choose
Marygrove College to continue their academic and
athletic careers (Laura Nail, 2009 - Women's Soccer). After his junior year on
the pitch, Szukhent became well-known in Mid-Michigan after receiving
All-Conference (Tri-Valley East) and All-District First Team honors.
As a
senior, Szukhent wanted more people to know the type of talent he possessed. A
stellar campaign was capped off by return trips to the All-Conference and
All-District teams, and eventually an All-Region First Team appearance. However,
the accolades did not stop there for the four-year varsity player.
Szukhent's
finest moment came shortly after the season when he was tabbed All-State
Honorable Mention. The honor was fitting after he diced up Tri-Valley East competition
over the course of his final season as a Birch Run Panther.
His high
school coach, Duane Enderle, led Marygrove's men's coach Matt Johnson to
Szukhent's talent. Enderle is also a volunteer assistant coach for women's
soccer at Marygrove
College.
Coach Johnson on Szukhent: Caleb is an extremely talented player that has the ability to become a very important piece to our puzzle over the next few years. Like the rest of his future teammates, he is a great person on and off the field. I am looking forward to coaching Caleb in the fall.
