DETROIT, Mich.- The defending national champions
look great, but got off to a rough start after some unlucky plays led to a 2-0
defeat in their opener Tuesday afternoon.
In their
first game since hoisting the 2009 USCAA National Championship Trophy, the Lady
‘Stangs came out strong and visibly outplayed a Top-30 NAIA team for 65 minutes
of play. Unfortunately, the visiting Lancers went up 1-0 in the 21st
on an own goal and scored on an awkward bounce in the 62nd to seal a
2-0 road win.
The Mustangs'
attack was paced by freshman Nicole
Polite (Schoolcraft College/Sterling Heights, Mich.) with three shots on goal. In all, the
Mustangs went toe-to-toe with the Lancers in shots on goal and eventually were
outgunned by a mere two shots.
After a week
off, the Mustangs will travel to yet another perennial NAIA power, Walsh
University (OH). A soon-to-be NCAA Division II program, the Walsh University Caviliers
present another hurdle for the second-year Mustangs early on in the season. All
the action will take place 4pm Tuesday, August 31 at Walsh University.
