CANTON, Mich. -- The first official score has been submitted for Marygrove Golf after Ian McCarthy (Dexter, Mich./Dexter) complete a round at nearby Fellows Creek Golf Course in Canton, Michigan.
Course: Fellows Creek Golf Course (South and West); Par: 72
McCarthy, a freshman from Dexter, completed his first round of intercollegiate golf with an 85. The score resulted in a 15-over for McCarthy after navigating tough conditions in 40-degree weather coupled with a brisk, steady wind.
The round featured a total of 48 golfers in a field that was home to all members of the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference (WHAC).
McCarthy's 85 would be good for 32nd place in his first competition. Finishing near the top half of competition, McCarthy now looks to take his experience to Pennsylvania to the 2012 United States Collegiate Athletic Association (USCAA) National Championship Meet.
If McCarthy finds better conditions in Pennsylvania, it is not a stretch to say the freshman could be in the running if he shoots mid-70's at Monday's national championship meet.
"It was really tough out there today for all golfers," said head coach and PGA professional Frank McAuliffe. "Ian was one of many that ended with higher scores than they hoped for due to the conditions."
Our athletics website, www.marygrovemustangs.com, will feature a preview of Monday's 2012 USCAA National Championship event Sunday (Oct. 7) evening.
