ROCHESTER, MI--Three Mustangs participated in the first intercollegiate cross country race on Saturday. The Mustang men traveled to Oakland University to run in the Golden Grizzly Open.
Two freshmen, Anthony
Butler and LeAvery Wyckoff, were
signed in the offseason to lead the Mustang charge for the inaugural season. Heading
into the inaugural race, the freshmen duo couldn't wait to compete after weeks
of two-a-day practices and intense training. Butler, a Wyandotte Roosevelt graduate, led
the Mustangs on day one with a time of (22:34). Wyckoff,
who came to Marygrove via Detroit Communication and Media Arts, followed Butler closely with a
time of (23:05). The times would land the Mustangs in 53rd and 60th
place respectively.
The third Mustang to compete in the Golden Grizzly Open was Frank Murdock. Murdock, a senior
forward on the Mustang basketball team, decided to run cross country in his
fourth and final year in college. Beating all odds, Murdock came out strong and
had a successful race after only training for three days. A time of (23:41) would
propel Murdock to a 64th place finish.
The Mustangs now turn their attention to next week's Tommy Titan Invitational (Running Fit/Detroit Titan). The race will be held Saturday, September 12 at 11:30am at Cass Benton Park in Northville.
