DETROIT, Mich. -- With one game left in the regular season, senior forward Jordan Berry (Dearborn, Mich./Crestwood) notched his WHAC-leading 20th goal on the season to tie Wednesday's (Oct. 24) match up against Aquinas College (11-5-1; 6-3 WHAC). The goal sent the game to overtime where the Mustangs eventually came away 2-1 winners.
Berry's second half tally knotted the game up after Aquinas was able to go ahead 1-0 early in the first half.
At the end of regulation, both teams showed exactly why an extra frame was needed with many of the game's key categories in a dead heat. After 90 minutes of 1-1 play, the Mustangs and Saints were nearly even in shots with Aquinas taking the slight edge, 16-15. Nine Marygrove shots were on net, while Aquinas managed to target eight of their 16 shots over the course of the first 90 minutes.
The Mustangs would hold a 6-3 edge in corner kicks heading into overtime.
In the extra period, freshman keeper Christian Bryant (Plymouth, Mich./Southfield Christian) stopped an early Saints chance with a diving save. The save helped shift the momentum in overtime to the Mustangs as the team would eventually knock in the game-winner with 29 seconds to play in the first overtime.
Freshman forward Abdoullie Jallow (Bansang, The Gambia/Rust) tallied his seventh goal of the 2012 campaign after knocking home the game-winning shot. Fellow freshman Haider Alzayadi (Baghdad, Iraq/Wayne State University) was credited with the assist on the play after playing the touch to Jallow. The assist marked Alzayadi's first point as a Mustang.
Bryant ended the day with 10 saves for the Mustangs.
The Mustangs (6-8-3; 4-2-3 WHAC) host their final regular season contest against WHAC counterpart, Davenport University (8-6-1; 4-3-1 WHAC), Saturday (Oct. 27) at 3:00pm. Senior Day activities will precede the 3:00pm match.
