GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. -- Win No. 10 on the season was made possible after the Mustangs (10-18; 0-9 WHAC) earned a day one split at the AQ/CU Tournament. A first match loss to Rochester was quickly erased as the Mustangs topped Spring Arbor in four sets.
Match One: Rochester 3, Marygrove 1 (25-17, 13-25, 22-25, 24-26)
The Mustangs were paced by a balanced effort in both matches. In the first match, sophomore middle Kiara Cobbs (Detroit, Mich./King) helped lead the way with junior outside hitter Katharina Hall (Livonia, Mich./Henry Ford CC) as the pair tallied 13 and 12 kills respectively.
Senior libero Shana Tooley (Belleville, Mich./Belleville) worked her way toward 19 digs, while Jaci Michetti (Woodhaven, Mich./Wayne State) and Elizabeth Lerczak (Hale, Mich./Hale) chipped in 14 digs and 10 digs respectively.
Match Two: Marygrove 3, Spring Arbor 1 (25-7, 18-25, 25-20, 25-16)
Cobbs paced the Mustang effort again in match two with a 13-kill effort. Michetti followed closely with 11 kills of her own.
Tooley once again led in the digs department with 15. Hall completed another well-rounded effort with 12 digs, while Lerczak added 11. Megan Gohl (Belleville, Mich./Belleville) also reached double-digits in digs with 10 in the second match win.
One particular milestone was reached Friday (Oct. 26) as [Elizabeth] Lerczak became the fourth Mustang to join the 1,000 dig club. All four seniors now have a place in the club as their collegiate careers wind down.
The Mustangs will be back in action tomorrow morning at 8:00am when they take on Grace College to open day two at the AQ/CU Tournament. Later, the team will square off against Shawnee State at 12:00pm.
