DETROIT, Mich. -- The Mustangs (10-21; 0-10 WHAC) sent off their seniors in style with a tremendous evening full of gratitude toward seniors that helped start the program in the fall of 2009. The senior night festivities went off without a hitch despite the 3-1 conference loss at the hands of UM-Dearborn.
UM-Dearborn 3, Marygrove 1 (20-25, 25-19, 21-25, 21-25)
With their friends and family packing the gym, the women's volleyball team put on a spirited effort that mirrored their tireless effort over the past four years. After a set one loss, the Mustangs raced back to knot the match up, 1-1, to head into senior night festivities.
After the ceremony, the Wolves were able to take control of the final two sets by a duo of four-point wins.
The Mustangs were led by sophomore Kiara Cobbs (Detroit, Mich./King) in kills with 11. Junior outside hitter Katharina Hall (Livonia, Mich./Henry Ford CC) had another stellar showing for the Mustangs with 11 digs and eight kills. Alixandria Pappas (St. Clair Shores, Mich./Lakeview) chipped in with by chalking up four kills while having a hand on four blocks for the Mustangs. The trio continues to lead a stellar cast of returners that the coaching staff of Jamie Baker and Breann Dotstry intend on building off of as the Mustangs look to replace four seniors at season's end.
Of the four seniors, outside hitter Jaci Michetti (Woodhaven, Mich./Wayne State) had 11 digs and eight kills in her final home game at Marygrove. Elizabeth Lerczak (Hale, Mich./Hale) tallied seven digs and five kills in a well-rounded effort, while Shana Tooley (Belleville, Mich./Belleville) turned in an impressive 20 digs in her final home contest. Megan Gohl (Belleville, Mich./Belleville) accounted for a large portion of the offense with 30 assists and 19 digs.
The Mustangs, sitting at 0-10 in their first season in the WHAC, will look to end the conference/regular season on a high note when they travel to take on fellow conference newcomer, Lawrence Tech, Friday (Nov. 2) at 7:00pm . The Blue Devils have one match remaining before Friday's showdown as they also seek their first conference win.
