Also a first, the Mustangs were able to be .500 or better until Sept. 21. If you add in an early season tournament that featured two-set contests (not countable contests), the Mustangs would have been .500 or better until Oct. 13. The feat speaks to the Mustangs chemistry despite going through a season of firsts in only the fourth year of the program.
On Wednesday (Nov. 7), Baker and the Mustangs will take their conference No. 12 seed on the road to challenge the No. 5 Racers of Northwestern Ohio (31-5; 8-3 WHAC). The Racers completed their 2012 regular season with 31-5 overall and 11-1 at home. Wednesday's first round match is slated to begin at 6 p.m. from Lima, Ohio.
EARLIER THIS SEASON
Marygrove and Northwestern Ohio have met once this season with the lone meeting coming at the home of the Racers. In that match on Oct. 16, the Racers would top the Mustangs in three sets (10-25, 17-25, and 13-25). The Mustangs will look to rev up their own play as they face the Racers in the WHAC's first round match.
A GREAT GROUP
The Mustangs' roster features four seniors that helped start the program in 2009. The close-knit group of Megan Gohl (Belleville, Mich./Belleville), Elizabeth Lerczak (Hale, Mich./Hale), Jaci Michetti (Woodhaven, Mich./Wayne State), and Shana Tooley (Belleville, Mich./Belleville), will look to keep their collegiate careers rolling as they take on the favored No. 5 seed Racers.
The group will be flanked by underclassmen Kiara Cobbs (Detroit, Mich./King), Katharina Hall (Livonia, Mich./Henry Ford CC), Alixandria Pappas (St. Clair Shores, Mich./Lakeview), and Brittany Stephens (Southfield, Mich./Oakland Univ.). Of the talented underclassmen bunch, junior transfer [Katharina] Hall is one of the hitters that will be able to put pressure on the No. 5 Racers.
Wednesday's WHAC Playoff match will feature live audio/video. The Marygrove College Athletics facebook and twitter feeds will defer to the home team's coverage during the match. Full recaps will be available on each feed after the contest.
