DETROIT, Mich. -- The New Year's first Saturday (Jan. 5) matinee conference matchup for the Mustangs (2-14, 0-9 WHAC) nearly ended in victory after a furious comeback was put on in the game's final minutes. The visiting Gray Wolves (5-12, 2-7 WHAC) would be the team to start the 2013 slate on the right foot as they held on to win 63-57.
Down 10 at the half, 35-25, the Mustangs were faced with a deficit that was all too familiar over the course of an unlucky 2012-13 campaign.
The Mustangs, never showing signs of letting up, continued to battle in the second half as they began to chip away at the Gray Wolves' double-digit lead.
Down 15 (50-35) with 11:36 to play, the Mustangs galloped back into the contest behind a 22-10 run over the next 10-plus minutes of play.
The run brought the Mustangs to within one possession at 60-57 with 53-seconds left to play.
In the end, two missed free throws and an unforced turnover would thwart the Mustangs' comeback attempt sending the Gray Wolves to the six-point victory.
Ciara Moore (Detroit, Mich./Northwestern) poured in a game-high 18 points in the two possession conference loss. Moore would add seven assists and six rebounds to complete her most well-rounded game in a Mustang uniform.
Keara Marks (Detroit, Mich./Renaissance) would net 12 points to inch closer to the all-time scoring mark. The senior forward needs a mere 79 points to earn a share of the all-time mark.
