SOUTHFIELD, Mich. -- A matchup between teams decimated by injuries provided a thrilling, hard fought contest that brought the second win of the 2012-13 campaign and a season sweep over the Lawrence Tech Blue Devils for the Mustangs (2-20, 2-12 WHAC).
Led by brothers Corey Dunaj (Warren, Mich./Cousino) and Kevin Dunaj (Warren, Mich./Cousino), the Mustangs jumped out to an early lead behind strong rebounding. The brothers combined for 14 rebounds (7 offensive) in the first half to lift the Mustangs to a 32-22 double-digit halftime lead.
The Blue Devils (2-20, 1-13 WHAC) recorded 16 rebounds (6 offensive) as a team in the first half.
The 10-point halftime lead was also made possible by Cameron Coburn (Bay City, Mich./All Saints) after the senior drained one from long range as time expired.
In the second stanza, the Mustangs continued to keep their foot on the pedal en route to their largest lead of the season of 14 points when Coburn struck from 17 feet to make the score 47-33 with 10:59 to play.
In the end, the Mustangs balance – six players with six points or more – and rebounding led to a 61-50 victory over fellow WHAC newcomer Lawrence Tech University.
The Mustangs outrebounded the Blue Devils 48-32 in the 11-point conference victory.
Freshman Diante Taylor (Battle Creek, Mich./Central) and Kevin Dunaj led the Mustang charge with 11 points each. Dunaj would add 11 boards for the first double-double of his collegiate career. Taylor pulled down six rebounds to accompany four assists and four steals.
Coburn added nine points, seven rebounds and four assists in 37 minutes of action, while fellow guard Zamarre Neely (Detroit, Mich./Summit Academy) also netted nine with three rebounds and an assist.
Corey Dunaj would corral nine rebounds and tally eight points to complete his most well-rounded game in a Mustang uniform.
Kenny Enoex (Warren, Mich./Fitzgerald) chipped in with six points on 3-of-5 shooting.
