DEARBORN, Mich. -- The men's golf program, led by head coach Frank McAuliffe and assistant Ronnie Pollack, Jr., picked up a commitment for the 2013-14 season from Dearborn Divine Child's Tyler Newell.
Newell, a 6'1" varsity golf student-athlete as a Falcon at Divine Child, will head to Marygrove next fall after putting together a successful 2012 season. Newell's junior campaign ended in a district championship and regional championships appearance for the Falcons. A season earlier, Newell was on the junior varsity squad when the Divine Child varsity took home a 2011 district crown.
Heading into his senior season, Newell will likely earn back-to-back varsity letters as he hopes to help the Falcons to a third straight district title – and more.
Showcasing his passion for the game, Newell is currently works at Dearborn Country Club and is a two-year member of the Michigan PGA Jr. Tour. The senior also participated in the Meijer/Adams Tour for a year and the Downriver Jr. Tour.
Comments from head coach Frank McAuliffe: I am looking forward to having the opportunity to coach Tyler next season. His tremendous excitement for the game and work ethic makes him a perfect fit for our growing program. With those qualities, combined with his excellent work in the classroom, Tyler possesses the ability to become a leader on the Marygrove Golf Team right away.
Noteworthy: Newell was part of an undefeated junior high men's lacrosse championship squad at St. Michaels Catholic. Next year, Marygrove will welcome men's lacrosse as their 14th varsity sport. Also, Newell will become the first Divine Child student-athlete to participate in a varsity sport at Marygrove in the 10-plus year history of the athletic program at the College.
