LIVONIA, Mich. -- The women's volleyball team continued to add key pieces to the program for 2013 with the signing of local standout Ashley Murphy. With family and friends at her side, the Livonia Clarenceville star inked a 2013-14 Letter of Intent to become the third commit of the class for head coach Jamie Baker and the Mustangs.
Murphy, a 5'10" outside hitter, enjoyed a highly successful four-year varsity career on the volleyball court for the Clarenceville Trojans. As a freshman, Murphy's hard work and determination earned the outside hitter the annual Coaches Award. She would take home the same honor at the end of her senior campaign in 2012. Over the course of her final two seasons at Clarenceville, Murphy earned the team's Best Offense award and was named captain her final season as part of a career that would see the outside hitter notch back-to-back All-Region selections.
The 5'10" athlete also played four years of varsity basketball and soccer where she was named captain three years in each sport. On the pitch, Murphy was a three-time Team MVP & Best Offense awardee due to her outstanding play for the Trojans. The multi-sport star was awarded the Best Leadership honor two times during her days on the hardwood.
Currently, Murphy is preparing for her second season on the Trojans' track & field team. Last season, the four-sport athlete went out for track to stay in shape and ended up toppling a 17-year old record at Clarenceville High School.
Most importantly, Murphy will head to Marygrove a well-rounded student-athlete after garnering four academic letters at Clarenceville for her hard work in the classroom.
Noteworthy: Murphy will join former Clarenceville Trojan Katharina Hall on the Marygrove Volleyball team next season. Hall remains active in the Clarenceville Volleyball community, and is slated to be a 2013 captain for Marygrove Volleyball after coming off a season in which she tallied 243 kills.
Coach Baker on Murphy: Ashley is a driven student-athlete that will make an immediate impact on the team in a variety of ways. She will be an asset at the net with her strong block and powerful attacks. Ashley is a diverse player that can play any front row position, and adds an element of surprise to the game. Her incredible work ethic, combined with her knowledge of the game, will make her another very valuable part of the Mustang Volleyball program. I look forward to coaching Ashley and the rest of the team next season!
