DETROIT, MI--The Mustangs treated their home crowd to a dominating sweep (25-21, 25-20, 25-21) of the Grace Bible College Tigers on Wednesday night. The win was the Mustangs fourth in the young history of the program.
A slow start would hamper the Mustangs out of the gate as the two teams were knotted at (6-6) shortly after set one began. Freshman libero Shannon Pietruszka led a furious first set Mustang rally as the team from Marygrove finished the match strong, winning 25-21.
Coach Graves and the Mustangs were able to carry over the first set momentum into the second set and quickly shot out to a 16-8 lead. However, sloppy play allowed the Tigers to bounce back and make the game competitive once again. In the end, the Mustangs would execute to close the set and take a 2-0 lead in the match.
The third set would be owned by the Mustangs as they wouldn't allow the Tigers to prolong the match. A (25-21) third set win would complete the sweep and improve the Mustangs record to 4-14 on the season.
Jalissa Favors and Jaci Michetti had 13 and 10 kills respectively. While Elizabeth Lerczak and Shannon Pietruszka chipped in with 25 digs apiece. Megan Gohl set the Mustangs up for success with 37 assists on the night.
The Mustangs hit the road tomorrow for a 7:30pm match at Kuyper College. The Cougars, who were one of eight participants in the inaugural Marygrove College Invitational, will look to avenge a loss to the Mustangs from the invitational.
