DETROIT, Mich. -- Second-year head coach Jamie Baker announced Friday (Aug. 9) the signing of NCAA Division I transfer, Amelia Velez. The former NCAA DI student-athlete joined the Mustangs earlier this week when the team opened up preseason training for the 2013 campaign. She is eligible to play immediately.
Velez, a 6'1" senior middle blocker, will play the final season of her collegiate career closer to her hometown of Imlay City, Mich., after committing to Detroit's Marygrove College. Before arriving at Marygrove, Velez made stops at Schoolcraft College, Mott Community College, and most recently Prairie View A&M University (Tex.). While at Schoolcraft, Velez joined forces with current Marygrove teammates Katharina Hall and Sarah Suppelsa (pictured).
As a Spartan at Imlay City High School, Velez was named All-Blue Water Area Conference (BWAC) Honorable Mention in 2008 and an All-BWAC First Team member in 2009. The three-year varsity letterwinner ended a heralded high school career with a Class B All-Region nomination. Velez also earned letters in basketball and track, and was an All-BWAC performer her senior year on the hardwood.
Velez, a standout in the classroom, made the Prairie View A&M Dean's List in 2012-13.
Coach Baker on Velez: Millie (Amelia) is an excellent addition to our program. She is a smart player with a great skillset that will make an impact on our team immediately. Millie, along with fellow seniors Katharina Hall (captain) and Sarah Suppelsa, give us a strong leadership core for an otherwise young team this season. We look forward to seeing our 2013 team in action soon!
