CHICAGO, Ill. -- The Mustangs (1-3) were back at it Saturday (Aug. 24) looking to continue to improve as a team against a pair of the NAIA's top teams in Cardinal Stritch (Wisc.) and Goshen (Ind.). Both matches would take place at the 2013 Roosevelt University Quad in Chicago, Ill.
In the opener against Cardinal Stritch, the Mustangs faced a squad that was 28-11 a year ago. The experience of the Stritch team, combined with a few tired legs on the Mustangs behalf, led to straight set defeat. Kiara Cobbs (Detroit, Mich./King) and Ashley Murphy (Southfield, Mich./Livonia Clarenceville) led the way with eight and two kills respectively. Kara Kempinski (Livonia, Mich./Schoolcraft) paced the defense with 18 digs.
Match two in the Windy City was against Goshen. The Mustangs would once again suffer a setback against a very tough opponent to drop to 1-3 on the young season. Sarah Suppelsa (Livonia, Mich./Concordia-Ann Arbor) led the attack with 12 kills, while Amelia Velez (Imlay City, Mich./Prairie View A&M) followed with eight kills. Kara Kempinski put together another solid effort with 27 digs. Sister Nicole Kempinski (Livonia, Mich./Schoolcraft) and senior Katharina Hall (Livonia, Mich./Henry Ford CC) chipped in with 10 digs each.
The Mustangs travel to the Sunshine State over the Labor Day weekend to take part in the Northwood (Fla.) Volleyfest. The team's twitter feed, @MGroveVBALL, will update from Florida in between sets.
