EAST CHICAGO, Ind. -- The Mustangs moved to 3-0 on the young season with a victory over neighboring counterpart, Rochester College (1-1), to open play for both teams at the 2013 Crimson Wave Invite hosted by Calumet College of St. Joseph. The 2-1 final tally marked the third come-from-behind victory in as many outings for the Mustangs to begin the season.
All three of the Mustangs contests have been decided by a 2-1 margin.
Due to inclement weather in the greater Chicago area, the start time was pushed back three hours to send the game under the lights. The delay caused both the Mustangs and Warriors to get off to slow start as the teams would play to a 0-0 draw at the halftime break.
In second half action, the Warriors would climb on top of the neutral site battle with a goal in the 51st minute. Much like Friday's (Aug. 30) match at (RV) Spring Arbor, the Mustangs would answer quickly to knot the game. Sophomore attacking mid Gonzalo Caceres (Detroit, Mich./Southwestern) provided the equalizer nine minutes later for his first goal of the 2013 campaign. In all three games, the Mustangs have went down 1-0 and answered with a game-tying tally within 10 minutes.
The 1-1 score would remain until the 77:49 mark when the Mustangs drew a foul in the box against the Warriors' Nate Hicklin. Senior forward Jad El-Zein (Tyre, Lebanon/Dearborn Fordson) lined up for the PK and sent it home for his third game-winning goal in as many contests. The reigning USCAA Player of the Week is making a strong case to repeat with two goals and an assist in two outings this week. El-Zein has amassed nine points over three contests to open his senior season.
Freshman keeper Ryan Plonka (St. Clair Shores, Mich./Macomb CC) turned away two shots for his third win in net. The Mustangs outshot the Warriors13-8 overall (7-3 shots on goal) to earn their fourth consecutive win over their NAIA neighbor.
