DETROIT, Mich. -- Senior forward Jad El-Zein (Tyre, Lebanon/Dearborn Fordson) started his final college season with a bang by being named USCAA Player of the Week after knocking home a pair of goals in the 2-1 season-opening victory over Taylor (Aug. 24). The four-point contest was only the beginning of El-Zein's early season tear as the senior put together three strong performances last week to be tabbed the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference (WHAC) Offensive Player of the Week.

El-Zein knocked in a goal in each of his team's three games over the Labor Day weekend to earn his first WHAC Player of the Week honor. On the week, El-Zein amassed nine points (three goals, three assists), including game-winning goals against (RV) Spring Arbor and Rochester. The senior scored the game-tying goal against Calumet (Ind.) and assisted on two other scores in the 4-1 decision that brought home the 2013 Crimson Wave Invite Championship. The invite victory was the first in the brief history of men's soccer at Marygrove College.

In total, El-Zein has recorded 13 points over his first four matches of 2013. The point total is the highest for El-Zein since 2010 (22 points). Currently, the senior ranks first in the NAIA in game-winning goals with three, and ranks third in goals scored (5).

LAST WEEK – USCAA TABS EL-ZEIN PLAYER OF THE WEEK

Marygrove's dual affiliation with the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) and United States Collegiate Athletic Association (USCAA) has led to increased student-athlete recognition over the past few years. On Wednesday (Aug. 28), the USCAA – an association the Mustangs have been a member of since 2003 – tabbed Jad El-Zein (Tyre, Lebanon/Dearborn Fordson) as their first Men's Soccer Player of the Week for the 2013 season.

The recognition is the latest in a long line of honors Mustang student-athletes have received from the USCAA.

El-Zein, a senior forward, earned the distinction of becoming USCAA Player of the Week after a dominating performance on the pitch to open the 2013 campaign. On Saturday (Aug. 24), El-Zein helped drive the Mustangs to victory with a two-goal performance against a highly-respected Taylor University (Ind.) squad. After the team fell behind 1-0 in the 15th minute, the senior forward struck minutes later with a highlight-reel goal via bicycle kick. The brilliant goal would knot the game at 1-1 heading into the halftime break.

The senior opened the second half with a header that beat Taylor's keeper for the game-winning goal in the 2-1 victory. With his two-goal effort, El-Zein opens the season amongst the nation's best in goals and points per game.

El-Zein and the Mustangs face a big road challenge Friday (Aug. 30) when they travel to Spring Arbor University for a 7:00 p.m. contest. After the Spring Arbor tilt, the Mustangs will continue west on I-94 to take part in the Crimson Wave Invite over Labor Day weekend. The first contest at the annual invite has the Mustangs squaring off against local NAIA counterpart, Rochester College.
