DETROIT, Mich. -- The comeback kids strike again! After allowing an early goal to the visiting Lancers of Grace College (2-2), the Mustangs clawed back not once, but twice to take Saturday's (Sept. 7) non-conference matchup by a 3-2 final tally.
The win draws the brief series between the squads even at 1-1 after the Lancers topped the Mustangs, 2-0, to open the 2012 season.
Minutes into the match, the Lancers shot through the Mustangs (5-0) defense to take an early 1-0 lead. In the 34th minute, a hand ball in the box allowed the Mustangs to knot the game at one apiece after a penalty was called in the box against the visiting Lancers. Jad El-Zein (Tyre, Lebanon/Dearborn Fordson) converted the PK for his sixth goal of 2013 to capitalize on the Grace miscue.
The score would remain 1-1 through the halftime break after the teams setlled in the rest of the first half.
El-Zein and the Mustangs came out strong in the second stanza and owned a strong advantage before a misplayed ball snuck through the defense for Grace's second goal of the day.
Trailing 2-1 with six minutes to play, the Mustangs mounted a strong attack that ended in a shot off the keeper and later ringing off the crossbar to set up a corner kick. Sophomore Haider Alzayadi (Simawa, Iraq/Wayne State University) would take the corner and find the head of defender Moussa Diallo (Conakry, Guinea/Dearborn Fordson) for the game-tying goal late into the contest. The goal was Diallo's first collegiate tally after the defender pushed up to give the Mustangs extra attackers in the set piece opportunity.
Less than a minute later, reigning Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference (WHAC) Offensive Player of the Week, Jad El-Zein, would strike for his seventh goal of the season off an Abdoulie Jallow (Bansang, The Gambia/Rust) cross. The goal, sent into the net in the 86th minute, was the fourth game-winning goal notched by El-Zein in five games this season. Jallow, 2012 WHAC Newcomer of the Year, set up the game-winning play for his first points of 2013.
Freshman keeper Ryan Plonka (St. Clair Shores, Mich./Macomb CC) earned his fifth win in as many chances to begin his collegiate career.
With the win, the Mustangs move to 5-0 overall – a record for the program – with all but one win coming by a one-goal margin. The team will now prepare for a road matchup against last season's NCAA Division II national champion runner-up, Saginaw Valley State University. Last season, the Mustangs held a 3-1 advantage late before the Cardinals came back to win, 4-3. This year's match is set for Sunday (Sep. 15) at 1:00 p.m. in University Center, Mich.
