UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. -- The Mustangs went into NCAA Division II powerhouse Saginaw Valley State University (2-1-1) looking to defend their 5-0 record as they near the start of Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference (WHAC) play next week. The Sunday (Sept. 15) afternoon tilt in Saginaw marked the first time the two teams met since last year's heartbreaking 4-3 loss on Sept. 7, 2012.
The Cardinals, ranked 8th in NCAA D2 when the teams met last year, ended the 2012 season as the national champion runner-up. This season, the Cardinals were ranked as high as 2nd nationally in the NCAA D2 preseason poll.
Ahmed Jamalaldin (Dearborn, Mich./Henry Ford CC) got things going early by putting the Mustangs on the board first with a goal less than five minutes into the contest. The lead, however, would not last long as the Cardinals answered back to tie it, 1-1, minutes later.
Saginaw Valley would add two more scores off unlucky plays for the Mustangs to go ahead 3-1. Jamalaldin nearly made it a one-goal game when his header grazed off the crossbar. The host Cardinals added two more goals to take a 5-1 lead at the break.
In the second half, the Mustangs would climb back by adding two goals off the feet of Gonzalo Caceres (Detroit, Mich./Southwestern) and Brandon Herber (St. Clair Shores Mich./Macomb CC). Herber's tally, a nifty chip over the Cardinal keeper, was his first at the collegiate level. Despite the second half surge, Saginaw Valley would answer with a pair of goals – and a late penalty kick – to win 7-3.
Showcasing their ability against tough competition, the Mustangs played even in other key stat columns as both teams had 12 shots on goal (Marygrove 20 shots, SVSU 18). The Cardinals had seven corners to Marygrove's six.
The men's soccer team opens the 2013 WHAC season at home Saturday (Sept. 21) at 4:00 p.m. against Lawrence Tech. Last season, the Mustangs edged the Blue Devils, 2-1, in Southfield. Listen to broadcast of the 2013 WHAC opener on the Mustang Sports Network, beginning at 3:50 p.m. for the pregame show.
