ST. MARY-OF-THE-WOODS, Ind. -- The third all-time meeting between Marygrove (2-4) and the Pomeroys of St. Mary-of-the-Woods College (3-2) went in the favor of the Mustangs by a final tally of 3-1. The match was the first in Indiana after the teams met in 2009 at the USCAA National Championship game and at Marygrove in 2012. The Mustangs have won all three contests, outscoring the Pomeroys 13-1 over the three meetings.
Junior Cheyenne York (Taylor, Mich./Truman) got things going early by scoring her first goal of 2013. York's goal was notched at the 10-minute mark to put the Mustangs on top, 1-0. Jessica Trimmer (Farmington Hills, Mich./North Farmington) was credited with the assist on the York goal. The 1-nil score remained until the Pomeroys evened the contest with a goal seconds before the first half came to a close.
The final seconds ticked away as the score was knotted at the half, 1-1.
In the second half, Trimmer would strike twice in the final six minutes to help lift the Mustangs to their second victory of the season. The pair of late goals lifted the sophomore's season total to three. Fellow sophomore Sara Ruch (Oxford, Mich./Oxford) provided the helper on Trimmer's game-winner, while junior Kaitlyn Vigna (China Twp., Mich./Marine City) found Trimmer for the final goal.
Trimmer now has both game-winning goals for head coach Tony Williams and the Mustangs.
Kaitlyn Pusey (Holly, Mich./Holly) earned the win in net after having a busy day. The senior keeper turned away 12 Pomeroy shots to help preserve the 3-1 win.
At 2-4, the Mustangs will remain on the road as they prepare to face NCAA Division II, Ursuline College. Last season, the Mustangs upended the Arrows at Marygrove by a 2-1 final. The win stands as the lone victory over a NCAA D2 opponent in the history of Marygrove Athletics
