LIMA, Ohio -- The men's golf team entered their first two-day competition of 2013 at the WHAC's third jamboree in Lima, Ohio. WHAC Jamboree No. 3, held Tuesday (Sept. 24), was hosted by the University of Northwestern Ohio at Hawthorne Hills Golf Club.
Jake Vogel (Comstock Park, Mich./Grand Rapids CC) returned to the course for the first time since shooting a program-best 74 (+3) at WHAC Jamboree No. 2 last week near his hometown in Grand Rapids. On Tuesday, the freshman had an up-and-down day to finish 44th in a loaded field after shooting a 14-over round of 86.
Vogel was joined in the 80s by teammates Michael Kanalas (Rives Junction, Mich./Jackson Northwest) and Tyler Newell (Livonia, Mich./Divine Child) after the pair shot equal rounds at 87. For Newell, the 87 continued a year-long run in which the freshman has shaved his score, setting a personal best along the way.
Kanalas' 87 was five strokes off of his best mark set earlier this season at the Siena Heights University Fall Invitational. The 82 (+11) is second to only Vogel's 74 set at The Highlands in Grand Rapids last week.
Davenport's Adrian Balbas was the day-one clubhouse leader with a 3-under 69. Davenport leads team scoring after day one of the WHAC's third jamboree with an 877. The University of Northwestern Ohio sits 30 shots off the pace with a 907.
The Mustangs will have a short turnaround as day two of WHAC Jamboree No. 3 begins Wednesday (Sept. 25) at 11:00 a.m. Day two action, hosted by Indiana Tech, will take place at Coyote Creek Golf Club in Fort Wayne, Ind.
