DETROIT, Mich. -- Sarah Suppelsa (Livonia, Mich./Concordia-Ann Arbor) led with 12 kills, while Amelia Velez (Imlay City, Mich./Prairie View A&M) and Katharina Hall (Livonia, Mich./Henry Ford CC) slammed down a combined 15 kills as the Mustangs (13-9, 0-5 WHAC) gave Cornerstone fits in a highly competitive four-set loss to the Golden Eagles (13-25, 26-24, 16-25, 16-25).
Cornerstone came into the match receiving votes in the latest NAIA Top-25 Coaches Poll and moved to a 12-9 overall clip with the win (4-1 WHAC).
The visiting Golden Eagles put together a near flawless first set to win 25-13. The momentum did not carry over to the second set as the Mustangs fired back on all cylinders to even the match, winning 26-24.
Senior leader Katharina Hall sent down the final kill of the set in emphatic nature to help draw the match even, 1-1, in fifth conference contest for both teams. Before Hall had the chance to win it, the Mustangs rallied to tie the set (24-24) behind an Ashley Murphy (Southfield, Mich./Livonia Clarenceville) kill. Hall and Kiara Cobbs (Detroit, Mich./King) got up for the block on the next play to set up the set-point Hall slammed to the floor.
Behind a spirited effort, the Mustangs carried their amazing play into the third set where they would force a Golden Eagle timeout after going up 4-0. The Mustangs would go up by as many as five in the third set before Cornerstone rallied back to knot it up, 10-10.
A 15-6 run to close the third set allowed the Golden Eagles to go up 2-1 in the match. The Golden Eagles would capitalize on the game-changing third set win to take the match in four, 3-sets-to-1. In total, the Mustangs committed just over 30 errors, making it hard to mount a comeback late against a fellow formidable team.
Cornerstone had four players in double-digit kills on the night.
Marygrove's assist lead was setter Nicole Kempinski (Livonia, Mich./Schoolcraft) with 25. Freshman Hayley Jury (Plymouth, Mich./Livonia Ladywood) added seven assists in relief duty. Amelia Velez led in blocks (1 solo, 3 assists) as the team was responsible for seven total in the match. Katharina Hall and Kara Kempinski shared a team-high in digs with 10. Hall was flawless in serve receive while K. Kempinski only mishandled one Golden Eagle serve in the thrilling match.
The Mustangs will remain home after receiving the weekend off to host Lourdes University Wednesday (Oct. 9) at 7:00 p.m.
