DETROIT, Mich. -- Cheyenne York (Taylor, Mich./Truman) and Jessica McClendon (Canton, Mich./Madonna University) both produced scoring chances, but the team couldn't connect against the NAIA's seventh-ranked Panthers of Davenport University Saturday (Oct. 5). The missed chances allowed the Panthers (10-1-0, 3-0-0 WHAC) to pull away late to win the conference matinee, 5-0.

In the first half, the visiting Panthers stunned the Mustangs (3-8-0, 0-3-0 WHAC) by sneaking in an early goal in the sixth minute. The goal was knocked in by the Panthers' Brenna Harter – her first of the season.

McClendon sent a shot in from the left corner of the box in the 41st minute that was saved by the Panthers' keeper, Michelle Marcus. The chance was the best of the first half for the Mustangs as they went down 1-0 into the halftime break.

Davenport would add their second goal in the 52nd minute as Lizzie Paul tallied her 11th on the season. York had a fine chance to answer but Marcus gobbled it up for one of her seven saves on the afternoon. The Panthers added three more goals over the final 25 minutes to earn the 5-0 win.

For most of the contest, the Mustang defense held their own against a powerful Panther attack that has now outscored opponents 27-0 over their past five games. Rebecca Collins (Garden City, Mich./Garden City), Shannon Melvin (Redord, Mich./Garden City), and Kamry Miller (New Boston, Mich./UM-Dearborn) were a few of the Mustangs to play well enough to keep the Panthers at bay for most of the match.

Overall, Davenport outshot the Marygrove 29-7, including a 17-7 advantage on target.

The women's soccer team will face the neighboring NCAA Division I University of Detroit Titans Monday (Oct. 7) at 3:00 p.m.
