METAMORA, Mich. -- Jake Vogel (Comstock Park, Mich./Grand Rapids CC) shot a 7-over 79 and Michael Kanalas (Rives Junction, Mich./Jackson Northwest) followed with an 85 as the men's golf team hosted the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference's final jamboree of the fall season in less than desirable conditions Monday (Oct. 7). The pair finished 16th and 36th respectively.
Tyler Newell (Livonia, Mich./Dearborn Divine Child), one of four freshmen on the Mustangs roster this season, started hot and finished with a 91 despite being greeted with chilly temperatures, high winds, and rain throughout the day.
The subpar conditions made the difficult par-72, 6,363 yard course at Metamora Golf & Country Club more challenging as many players in the 10-team field posted above average scores. Dylan Martin (Belleville, Mich./Homeschool) rounded out the Mustangs scoring on the day as the team posted a 384 to place 10th of 10 in the 56-player field.
Nick Campbell of Siena Heights came from behind to win individual medalist honors for the fall season after shooting and even-par 72 on the day. Davenport University finished eight shots behind Monday's winner Siena Heights, but entered with a padded lead to win the WHAC regular season title for the third straight time.
Frank McAuliffe, head coach of a young Mustang squad that fielded their first team in program history this season, was pleased with his group's effort.
"I'm very proud of the guys for battling through awful conditions today," said McAuliffe. "We were a few shots off of our lowest team score – which is really impressive since we were playing in elements we really haven't seen so far this season. We have a great group of young men on our team and I look forward to adding to our program in the near future."
The Mustangs score of 384 was five off their low round of 379 set at the WHAC's second jamboree on Sept. 19.
