DETROIT, Mich. -- The women's volleyball team went up early before the bounces didn't go their way helping the visiting Lourdes University Gray Wolves to a 3-2 win in a five-set marathon at the University of Detroit Jesuit High School Wednesday (Oct. 9). After being edged at home, the Mustangs record is now 13-10 overall and 0-6 in the WHAC. Lourdes moves to 11-8 overall with a 2-4 mark in the WHAC.
After going up one-set-to-none behind a 26-24 victory, the Mustangs looked poised to take the second set as well before late drama ensued as the Gray Wolves squeaked past in extra play, 32-30. Both teams sent home an equal 17 kills in the second set thriller.
Lourdes began the third set on a 14-7 run before the Mustangs drew to within five, 20-15, forcing a Lourdes timeout. The team inched closer to bring the score to 23-20 before Lourdes pulled away to win the third set 25-20.
In the fourth set, the Mustangs capitalized on 14 Lourdes attack errors to force a fifth set after posting a 25-17 win. The Mustangs ran out of gas in the final stanza to drop the fifth set by a 15-10 final.
A passionate effort by Nicole Kempinski (Livonia, Mich./Schoolcraft) helped fuel the Mustangs in the conference matchup. Kempinski led the Mustangs with 37 assists and chipped in with 25 digs, while sister Kara Kempinski paced the Mustangs in digs with 34.
Senior leader Katharina Hall (Livonia, Mich./Henry Ford CC) had another strong match in back for the Mustangs with 15 digs. Hall added 11 kills and was in on key blocks as the senior helped lead a strong team effort.
Kiara Cobbs (Detroit, Mich./King) sent back two Lourdes attacks by herself and assisted on seven other blocks as the junior showcased her strength around the net in the narrow loss. Amelia Velez (Imlay City, Mich./Prairie View A&M) had a match-high 16 kills and had a team-high two service aces.
The Mustangs will have a short turnaround as they ready for a trip to Grand Rapids Thursday (Oct.10) to take part in the Kuyper College Tri-Match. Match times are set for 4:00 p.m. (Kuyper) and 6:00 p.m. (Indiana Northwest).
