GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. -- The women's volleyball team improved to 15-10 overall and 15-4 in non-conference play this season with a pair of sweeps Thursday (Oct. 10) at the Kuyper Tri-Match in Grand Rapids. The back-to-back 3-0 wins came against the host Cougars and Indiana University Northwest Redhawks.

With the victories, the Mustangs improved to 9-1 all-time when playing Indiana Northwest and 10-0 when squaring off against Kuyper College.

Playing less than 24-hours removed from a five-set conference match, the Mustangs showcased their resiliency by posting a win in sweeping fashion over Kuyper. The win did not come easy as the Mustangs had a mere four minutes to warm up after their trip to Grand Rapids was delayed. Despite hopping off the bus minutes before the match, junior middle Kiara Cobbs (Detroit, Mich./King) continued her strong play against Kuyper College by totaling 11 kills. Sarah Suppelsa (Livonia, Mich./Concordia-Ann Arbor) tied Cobbs for a team-high 11 kills, while freshman Ashley Murphy (Southfield, Mich./Livonia Clarenceville) followed with eight of her own.

Katharina Hall (Livonia, Mich./Henry Ford CC) led the defense with 11 digs as sisters Kara Kempinski (Livonia, Mich./Schoolcraft) and Nicole Kempinski dug up nine and eight respectively. Cobbs tallied four solo blocks and two block assists to help solidify the win.

The second matchup against the Redhawks of Indiana Northwest went much like the first as the Mustangs cruised to victory in three sets. The two teams met on the opening day of volleyball action in 2013 as the Mustangs earned their first win of the year, 25-8, 25-16, 25-13.

Amelia Velez (Imlay City, Mich./Prairie View A&M) had a team-high nine kills in the second match rout. Teammate Sarah Suppelsa (Livonia, Mich./Concordia-Ann Arbor) got in on the action with six kills. Kara Kempinski chipped in with 13 digs, while Katharina Hall remained steady with eight digs.

Kiara Cobbs ended a strong stretch of play with a stellar seven solo blocks and one block assist in the three-set triumph over Indiana Northwest.

All active Mustangs contributed in the pair of sweeps to move the team's overall record to 15-10 on the season.
