GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. -- The men's soccer team avenged their season-ending loss a year ago with a 2-0 victory Saturday evening (Oct. 12) on the road at Cornerstone University. The win lifts the Mustangs to 9-4 overall and 4-2 in the WHAC, good for sole possession of third place as Cornerstone drops to 7-5-1 overall and 3-3-1 in the WHAC.
Jad El-Zein (Tyre, Lebanon/Dearborn Fordson) got the scoring going early with a free kick that curved around the Golden Eagle wall to beat the keeper. The bender was tallied at the 16:12 mark of the first half as El-Zein converted after a Cornerstone foul was called at the 18-yard marker.
The Mustangs – behind strong defensive play from Ahmed Almosawi (Dearborn, Mich./American Muslim Academy), Ali El-Habhab (Saida, Lebanon/Dearborn), Abdoulie Jallow (Bansang, The Gambia/Rust), and Chad Lane (St. Clair Shores, Mich./Lakeview) – set their anchor down by allowing one Cornerstone shot on goal in the first half to take a 1-0 lead into the break.
Early in the second half, sophomore Oneil Robinson (Montego Bay, Jamaica/Cornwall) found Ahmed Jamalaldin (Dearborn, Mich./Henry Ford CC) in the left side of the box to put the Mustang ahead, 2-0. Jamalaldin brought the ball down and chipped it over the Golden Eagle keeper for the insurance goal.
Mother Nature would become a factor late as rain in the Grand Rapids picked up over time. Despite the subpar conditions, the Mustangs held their shape defensively to hold Cornerstone to a mere one shot on target (eight shots overall) throughout the 90-minute affair.
Marygrove countered with a stellar offensive showing by tallying 13 shots, five on goal, with El-Zein leading the way (5 shots). Gonzalo Caceres (Detroit, Mich./Southwestern) followed with three shots on goal – including a savvy shot from 30-yards out that nearly caught the upper right 90 to give the Mustangs a 3-0 advantage. Alex Cabildo (Westland, Mich./John Glenn) sent two on with his latter being a great chance to the keeper's left side.
Levanno Lewis (Montego Bay, Jamaica/Cornwall), the reigning WHAC Defensive Player of the Week, had a rather pedestrian night in net as the Mustang defense held the Golden Eagles at bay. The freshman keeper had to stop a Cornerstone shot in the win for his third shutout of the season.
The Mustangs will return home for another key WHAC match against Madonna University Friday (Oct. 18) at 2:00 p.m. Fans can catch the game live on the Mustang Sports Network beginning at 1:50 p.m.
