DETROIT, Mich. -- The women's volleyball team will be New York bound Wednesday (Oct. 30) as they prepare to take on the field at the 2013 United States Collegiate Athletic Association (USCAA) Women's Volleyball National Championship after receiving the association's number one seed last week. Coming off a week in which the Mustangs earned their first Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference (WHAC) win and the USCAA's No. 1 seed, head coach Jamie Baker is pleased with her team's recent winning trend and remains determined the squad will keep up their hard work this week in New York.
"We have a great group this season," said Baker. "Our seniors have been incredible and remain a huge reason for our success this season and why received the top seed. We do have one important match remaining at Dearborn before we hit the road for New York, but I can say our team is focused on performing at their highest this weekend. We look forward to representing Marygrove College well at this year's national championship tournament."
The USCAA National Championship Tournament will be held in Canton, N.Y., on the campus of SUNY-Canton from Oct. 31 – Nov. 2. The top billing is the first in the five-year history of Marygrove Volleyball.
A banquet will precede tournament play to celebrate the association's participating teams, as well as the 2013 USCAA All-Americans and Academic All-Americans.
Sitting at 16-13 overall, the Mustangs put together a résumé that impressed the USCAA Selection Committee with wins over fellow association counterparts like 8-time national champion Florida College and local foe Rochester College. The top overall seed places Marygrove in Pool A play with defending national champion and 2013 No. 3 seed Daemen College, Cincinnati Clermont, Carlow University, and the winner of the Penn State University Athletic Conference Championship.
The first day and a half of the tournament will feature pool play action. After four pool play matches, the Mustangs will be reseeded as they enter the elimination round in their pursuit of the program's first national championship. The women's volleyball schedule currently lists all pool play matches, while elimination stage matches will be added upon seeding.
Pool play features the best-of-three set matches. Due to Marygrove's National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) affiliation, the pool play matches will not count toward this season's official record.
The Mustang Sports Network's Jeremy Otto will travel with the team to carry all national tournament matches with live audio beginning Oct. 31 at 11:20 a.m. Follow Marygrove Athletics on facebook and twitter for the latest updates on national tournament play.
