DETROIT, Mich. -- The Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference (WHAC) announced Amelia Velez (Imlay City, Mich./Prairie View A&M) as the Women's Volleyball Player of the Week after the senior willed her way to a program-record 22 kills last week in a win over Concordia-Ann Arbor. The record performance, along with strong showings by fellow seniors Katharina Hall and Sarah Suppelsa, lifted the Mustangs to their first WHAC win since joining the conference in Fall 2012.
In the four-set senior night win, Velez slammed down 22 kills in 37 attempts for an impressive .514 hitting percentage. The senior, playing in the second-to-last home match of her career, also had four digs, four blocks, and one serving ace to earn the conference distinction.
In her lone season with the Mustangs, Velez has amassed a team-leading 287 kills in 29 matches for a .286 hitting percentage. Velez also ranks second the team in blocks with 58 (Cobbs, 100).
Velez and the Mustangs will hit the court seeking their first WHAC road win Tuesday (Oct. 29) at UM-Dearborn. The match is slated for a 7:00 p.m. start. After the match, the Mustangs will hit the road for New York to take part in the 2013 USCAA National Championship Tournament as the No. 1 seed.
