CHICAGO, Ill. -- The women's basketball team opened the 2013-14 season on the road against one of the NAIA's best in No. 6 Roosevelt University Saturday (Nov. 2). With the emotions of hanging their championship banners from a season ago, the top-ranked Lakers beat the Mustangs in the season-opener, 99-51.
Roosevelt, fresh off a 24-7 campaign in 2012-13, won the free throw battle by taking twenty more attempts from the charity stripe than the Mustangs offered. The free throw advantage, combined with a decided advantage in bench points at 33-11, lifted the host Lakers past the Mustangs by the 99-51 final.
Adrienne Weaver (Flint, Mich./Mott CC) had a team-high 13 points on 6-of-14 shooting in the opening day setback. Senior guard Ciara Moore (Detroit, Mich./Northwestern) played 29 minutes, dropping in nine points to go along with three steals, while Arielle Edwards (Grand Rapids, Mich./Ottawa Hills) scored eight and added a team-high four steals.
The 2013-14 home opener will be Tuesday Nov. 5 at Detroit's Calihan Hall when the Mustangs welcome the Cougars of Kuyper College for a 7:30 p.m. tipoff. The game will feature the first women's basketball broadcast on the Mustang Sports Network. Pregame is slated for 7:20 p.m.
