GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. -- Home or away the Mustangs (2-1) proved to be too much for Kuyper College (0-3) this season as the women's basketball squad topped the Cougars for the second time in eight days with a 74-46 win Wednesday (Nov. 13) in Grand Rapids. The Mustangs won 95-40 on Nov. 5 in Detroit in the 2013-14 home opener.
With the win, Antonio Hitchcock's Mustangs surpassed their 2012-13 season wins total (1-27).
Sound defense was once again the key to victory for the Mustangs as they held the Cougars to 18% shooting from the floor in the first half. The stingy defense, coupled with a 14-of-35 (40%) effort offensively, led to a 34-16 halftime advantage for the Mustangs.
Kuyper was able to keep pace in the second stanza after the Mustangs emptied their bench in Wednesday's non-conference tilt. The Cougars shot better in the second half, but did not have enough to overcome the early deficit as the Mustangs won 74-46 in their final tune-up before conference play begins Saturday (Nov. 16).
Freshman forward Kierra Jordan (Westland, Mich./John Glenn) paced a balanced scoring effort with 15 points on 7-of-13 shooting. Jordan added eight rebounds and a steal to help lift the Mustangs to their second win of the season. Ciara Moore (Detroit, Mich./Northwestern) dropped in 12 points, while Raeha Weaver (Battle Creek, Mich./Kellogg Community College) scored 11 to round out the double-digit scorers for the Mustangs.
The Mustangs will tipoff at 1 p.m. Saturday in their new home, Northwest Activities Center, against WHAC favorite and NAIA No. 2, Davenport University.
