SYLVANIA, Ohio -- The magical run that was 2013 women's volleyball came to a close in Wednesday's (Nov. 13) first round WHAC matchup at Lourdes University (19-11). With the loss, the Mustangs (19-16) closed another great chapter in the history of the volleyball program as Katharina Hall (Livonia, Mich./Henry Ford CC), Sarah Suppelsa (Livonia, Mich./Concordia-Ann Arbor), and Amelia Velez (Imlay City, Mich./Prairie View A&M) all saw their collegiate careers end in Wednesday's three-set loss.
Down one-set-to-none, the Mustangs found themselves up 21-17 to force a Lourdes timeout in the second set. After the timeout, the Gray Wolves mounted a furious 8-0 to setup set point. From there, the Mustangs were able to get one point back before falling down two sets to the host Gray Wolves. In the third set, the Gray Wolves and Mustangs exchanged in a thrilling rally to close the game which was indicative of the type of season the "no quit" Mustangs had in 2013. In the end, the Gray Wolves edged the Mustangs in the third set, 27-25, to win the first round WHAC match.
Katharina Hall led the Mustangs with 7 kills and a .200 hitting percentage in her final match as a Mustang. Amelia Velez also tallied 7 kills to round out her collegiate career. Sarah Suppelsa followed closely behind with six kills for the Mustangs.
All three were recent recipients of conference postseason awards announced by the WHAC earlier Wednesday.
Kara Kempinski (Livonia, Mich.), the 2013 WHAC Libero of the Year, had a team-high 29 digs in the three-set affair. Sister Nicole Kempinski followed with 21 digs and added 16 assists on the Mustangs 27 kills. Hayley Jury (Plymouth, Mich./Livonia Ladywood) chipped in with eight digs, while Kiara Cobbs (Detroit, Mich./King) tallied four solo blocks and five block assists.
The 2013 edition of Marygrove Volleyball saw the team earn its first winning season behind the most wins in program history (19). The Mustang Sports Network will recap the amazing campaign in the coming weeks.
