DETROIT, Mich. -- The inaugural home game for Marygrove women's basketball at Detroit's Northwest Activities Center went in the favor of the visiting Panthers of Davenport University (5-0; 1-0 WHAC) by a 110-59 final. Davenport, 2012-13 NAIA National Champion runner-up, came into Saturday's (Nov. 16) WHAC opener ranked second in the nation.
An 8-0 run midway through the first half put a bit of distance between the Panthers and Mustangs (2-2; 0-1 WHAC) as Davenport increased their lead to 16 with a 30-14 advantage. The brief scoring spurt gave the Panthers all they needed to take a 59-32 lead into the halftime break.
The Mustangs, reloaded for the 2013-14 season, kept battling behind a spirited effort from seniors Ciara Moore (Detroit, Mich./Northwestern) and Adrienne Weaver (Flint, Mich./Mott CC). The pair amassed 15 and 12 points respectively, but it was not enough to match six Panthers in double-figures as No. 2 Davenport went on to win, 110-59.
Moore had a great line of 15 points, six assists, five rebounds, and four steals in the conference opening setback. Shawnicka Thomas (Detroit, Mich./Schoolcraft College) grabbed eight rebounds, while Raeha Weaver (Battle Creek, Mich./Kellogg CC) added eight points.
The Panthers were paced by Alison Bouman and Alex Law with game-highs of 16 points.
The Mustangs will host (RV) Madonna University Wednesday (Nov. 20) inside Northwest Activities Center at 5:30 p.m.
