DETROIT, Mich. -- The 2013-14 Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference (WHAC) home opener for men's basketball (0-5; 0-1 WHAC) was spoiled by the NAIA's No. 10 team, Davenport University, as the visiting Panthers (5-0; 1-0 WHAC) went on to win the contest, 102-46.
The WHAC opener also marked the inaugural men's basketball game played in Detroit's Northwest Activities Center (NWAC). The NWAC is the new home for Marygrove indoor sports until Fall 2015.
Marygrove opened the game by trading baskets with the Panthers throughout the first seven minutes of the first half. With the Mustangs down 13-11 at the 12:51 mark, the Panthers used a Nick Gamble layup to spark a 15-2 run to lift the visitors to a 50-23 halftime edge.
Second half action saw the shorthanded Mustangs falter late as the Panthers won, 102-46. The Mustangs, expecting potentially three starters back by the semester break, did not have the depth to keep pace with the Panthers Saturday (Nov. 16) afternoon.
The Mustangs were led by Diante Taylor (Battle Creek, Mich./Central) with 14 points, seven rebounds, and three assists. Taylor, a sophomore leader for the Mustangs, was followed in double-digit scoring by freshman Elijah Ingram (Detroit, Mich./Consortium) with 11 points. Ingram added four rebounds and two steals in the conference opener. Terrick Griffin (Detroit, Mich./PEC Prep) tallied nine points and four steals in the loss.
Davenport was led by Dominez Burnett with 30 points. Overall, the Panthers outshot the Mustangs from the field, 57%-to-26%.
The Mustangs return to action inside NWAC Wednesday (Nov. 20) at 7:30 p.m. when they host NAIA No. 17 Madonna University.
