GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. -- The Marygrove women's basketball team (2-4; 0-3 WHAC) continued their top-heavy WHAC schedule with a trip to Grand Rapids to take on a tough Cornerstone University (5-3; 2-2 WHAC) team. The host Golden Eagles, fresh off an upset over NAIA No. 2 Davenport University, rolled on Saturday (Nov. 23) to top the Mustangs, 85-55.
In the first half, the Mustangs hit a cold spell to halt their scoring at the 10:24 mark in the first half after Ciara Moore (Detroit, Mich./Northwestern) hit a three to cut the Golden Eagle lead to 28-13. The Mustangs would not score again until the 5:40 mark when Janeesa Jamierson (Battle Creek, Mich./Kellogg Community College) made a bucket from the paint. Cornerstone led at halftime, 40-26.
The Mustangs fell behind by as many as 35 in the second half to the Golden Eagles, eventually dropping the road WHAC tilt, 85-55.
Despite being outrebounded by a 61-34 margin, the Mustangs took care of the ball by only coughing up possession 15 times (Cornerstone had 12 turnovers).
The Mustangs were led by Shawnicka Thomas (Detroit, Mich./Schoolcraft College) with 11 points off the bench. Lashanda Mack (Detroit, Mich./Pershing) followed with nine points on 3-of-6 shooting from three point land.
A short trip to Lawrence Tech in Southfield lies ahead Tuesday (Nov. 26) as the Mustangs continue their search for WHAC win No. 1. Tip-off is scheduled for 6 p.m.
