GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. -- Cornerstone University (5-2; 3-1 WHAC), the Mustangs' third straight opponent receiving national attention in the NAIA Coaches' Poll, pulled away in the second half to win Saturday's (Nov. 23) conference contest, 99-52. Marygrove – playing shorthanded throughout the early part of the season – dropped to 0-7 overall and 0-3 in the WHAC behind another tough shooting effort.
Down 49-32 at the break, the Mustangs went cold to en route to a 20-point second half as the team shot 7-for-27 from the floor over the final 20 minutes. The unlucky day from the floor carried over the charity stripe once again as the Mustangs shot 43% from the foul line.
Cornerstone made the most of their opportunities as they held the advantage in field goal percentage (56%-29%), points off turnovers (32-11), second chance points (17-3), and bench points (54-19). The Golden Eagles' depth was also a contributing factor in the second half as the Mustangs ran out of fresh legs as the game was drawing to a close.
Diante Taylor (Battle Creek, Mich./Central) dropped in a team-high 15 points on 5-of-13 shooting. Taylor added five rebounds and a pair of steals in the conference setback. Jimmy Stewart (Punta Gorda, Fla./Charlotte) was the only other Mustang to reach double digits in scoring with 12 points. Stewart arguably had the best day from the floor for the Mustangs after shooting 3-of-7 from three-point range (4-for-9 overall). Kenny Enoex (Warren, Mich./Fitzgerald) tallied nine points to go along with six rebounds and three blocks.
Cornerstone was led by Cory Cox with a game-high 18 points.
The Mustangs, seeking their first win of the 2013-14 campaign, will tip-off at 8 p.m. Tuesday (Nov. 26) at Lawrence Tech.
