GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. -- The Mustangs (2-11) dropped the opener of the Davenport University Holiday Tournament to Calvin College (7-3) by a 111-62 final Friday (Dec. 27) in Grand Rapids. The neutral court battle had a home game feel for the Knights of Calvin College as they squared off with the Mustangs a mere 10 miles from their own Grand Rapids campus.
The Knights used the makeshift home game in day one of two at the DU Holiday Tournament to their advantage by taking a commanding 63-27 lead into the halftime break.
Calvin, hitting on all cylinders, opened up the 36-point halftime lead largely because of miscues by the Mustangs that led to a 23-6 Knight advantage in points off turnovers and 13-5 edge in second chance points after they outrebounded Marygrove 24-15.
The Mustangs had no answer for the hot-shooting Knights in the first 20 minutes of action as Calvin hit on 9-of-16 three pointers in a half where they connected on nearly 60% of their shots from the floor. Marygrove countered with a 35% effort from the floor in the first half on 9-of-26 shooting (1-of-7 3PM).
Second half action saw the Mustangs close the gap in many of the above statistical categories, but the team from northwest Detroit couldn't connect from the floor as Calvin ran away by a 111-62 final. The Knights continued their torrid pace by shooting 64% for the game. Marygrove went cold in the latter stanza to finish the game with a 29% clip from the field. Calvin used a 52-26 points in the paint and a 72-29 bench points advantage to create more distance between the teams in the second half.
The Mustangs were led by Janeesa Jamierson (Battle Creek, Mich./Kellogg CC) with 15 points and five rebounds. Arielle Edwards (Grand Rapids, Mich./Ottawa Hills) followed with nine points, four rebounds, one block, and a steal, while Ciara Moore (Detroit, Mich./Northwestern) and Anastasia Smith (Cleveland, Ohio/Bluefield State) added eight points each.
Calvin was paced by a balanced effort as five Knights reached double figures.
The Mustangs will be back in action Saturday (Dec. 28) for their second game in as many days at the DU Holiday Tournament when they take on Holy Cross (Ind.) at 1 p.m. Saturday's holiday tournament tilt against Holy Cross marks the rubber match in the brief all-time series as the teams split the first two meetings. Both games were played at holiday tournaments (SportONE Shootout at Indiana Tech, 2011, won by Marygrove & DU Holiday Tournament, 2012, won by Holy Cross).
