GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. -- The Mustangs (2-12) played their second game in as many days by taking the court Saturday (Dec. 28) in Grand Rapids against the last NAIA team the program defeated, Holy Cross (Ind.). The matchup between the Mustangs and Saints (4-11) marked the rubber match in the third all-time meeting after Marygrove won the first meeting in 2011, while Holy Cross picked up a victory at last year's Davenport Holiday Tournament. The Mustangs have come up short against fellow NAIA programs since their 2011 victory over Holy Cross.
Saturday's meeting in day two of the 2013 Davenport Holiday Tournament started in seesaw fashion before Holy Cross pulled away in the first half behind a 13-0 run to take the rubber match in Grand Rapids by a 76-46 final.
After relinquishing an early lead to go down 11-10, senior guard Ciara Moore (Detroit, Mich./Northwestern) knocked down three of her seven first-half points to put the Mustangs on top, 13-11 with 10:43 to play in the first stanza. The lead was short-lived as the Saints used a 13-0 run to put the Mustangs behind 24-13 with 6:35 remaining in the first half. The Mustangs, struggling to find their rhythm since the Moore three-pointer, went into the halftime break down 36-21 after shooting 18% from the floor.
Holy Cross shot 40% from the field – dropping in seven more field goals than the Mustangs – to create the 15-point halftime margin.
The Mustangs would come out strong to begin to the second half, but could not get enough shots to drop to mount a comeback and overcome the early deficit created by the 13-0 Saint run to drop the non-conference tilt, 76-46.
A 21% shooting effort doomed the Mustangs against the Saints (46%) in the 30-point setback. For the second straight day, the Mustangs' bench was outscored as Saints used a 39-11 advantage to take home the victory.
Adrienne Weaver (Flint, Mich./Mott CC) had a team-high 14 points to go along with six rebounds and four steals. Ciara Moore finished with nine points, two rebounds, and two steals, while Anastasia Smith (Cleveland, Ohio/Bluefield State) and Kaitlyn Pusey (Holly, Mich./Holly) chipped in with five points each for the Mustangs. Breomi Jackson (Detroit, Mich./Tennessee State) pulled down a team-high 10 rebounds.
Five Saints scored in double figures.
UP NEXT: The Mustangs closed the books on 2013 with the non-conference setback to the Holy Cross Saints. Ciara Moore, Adrienne Weaver and the Mustangs will return to WHAC action Jan. 4 with a visit to Lourdes University. Tip-off is scheduled for 1 p.m.
