Matt Johnson will be entering his third year as head coach of the
Marygrove Mustang Soccer program. After two successful years and a career record of 15-18, Johnson looks to take the program to new heights in 2011. Notable victories in the first two seasons at the helm include wins over NCAA D3's Bluffton and Defiance, as well as multiple NAIA wins in 2011.
Before Marygrove, Johnson enjoyed an extensive ten year professional career as a player. Johnson's professional playing career included stops with the Utah Freezz, San Diego Sockers, and most recently as a Player/Coach with the Detroit Ignition. As he guides the birth of the Mustangs, Johnson will be looking to draw on experience gained while leading the expansion Ignition to back-to-back regular season championships in their first two seasons.
In addition to his experience as a player, the Minneapolis, MN native has been successful coaching at both the club and high school levels. At the club level, Johnson led the Keliix Intra to a U19 Minnesota State Cup Championship.
Johnson is a graduate of the
University of Wisconsin-Green Bay where he majored in Political Science
with a minor in Social Change and Development. Matt currently resides
in Canton with his wife, Katie Alba, and son, Diego.
