LaCema Womack
will be entering the 2011 season as the new head coach of the Mustang
men's and women's cross country and track programs. Coach Womack's respected background
will help some of Marygrove's most youthful programs to undergo a smooth
transition as she takes over for former coach Lee Shaw. Serving as an assistant
for 2010-11 season, Coach Womack helped oversee the overall operations of the
program, specifically specializing in the team development for track &
field, multi-event, jumps, and throws, in addition to overall recruitment of
incoming student-athletes.
Coach Womack recently ended her Michigan
high school coaching career of 13 years
after taking on more responsibilities at the collegiate level. During that
time, she was a head boys and girls coach developing individual
student-athletes and school teams to City, Regional, and State Championships in
Track and Field, Sprints, Hurdles, Jumps, Throws and Distance events. Her final
season ended with the Detroit Public Schools at Communication & Media Arts
High (CMA) coaching the Boys Cross Country team to City and Regional
Championships.
In addition to cross country success at CMA, Coach Womack led the Boys Track & Field team to Regional victories in the Long Jump, 800m and 1600m, with some individuals earning All-State Team honors. Under her guidance, two CMA girls track & field members qualified in the throws event at the Regional level and placed highly at the State Championship Meet.
During the summer and off-season months, Coach Womack's dedication to local athletes leads her to coaching student and club athletes in all specialized events to help qualify them for the USATF and AAU National Junior Olympics. Her training and sports leadership, which involves conditioning, training and advising student-athletes, is widely-known as one of the best in the metro area for student-athletes looking to improve in event specific track & field events, or strengthen performances and preparation for their upcoming season and/or collegiate readiness. In addition, Womack has worked with and provided mentoring for her former student-athletes to become specialized event coaches in programs throughout the region.
Womack
added to her experience as women's sprint coach for the Midwest Meet of
Champions, a member of Michigan Interscholastic Track Coach Association
(MITCA). Capping off a well-rounded resume, Womack is also a Michigan Certified
Track & Field Official.
Coach Womack is a university educator and resides in Southfield, Mich.
A Detroit native, born September 11, 1983, Marquita M. McGowan graduated from St. Martin De Porres high school in 2001. From there, she gained a full Track & Field Scholarship from Bowling Green State University where she studied Exercise Science. Committed on and off the track, McGowan graduated with a Bachelor in Education of Science in 2006 after enjoying plenty of intercollegiate track & field success.
In 2010, she began coaching as an assistant coach for the girl's track & field program at Detroit Central High School. By 2010-2011, McGowan took over the role as the Girls Head Cross Country and Track & Field Coach. While coaching at Central High School, McGowan took on the role as Assistant Cross Country / Track& Field Coach and Strength and Conditioning Coach at Marygrove College. While working with Central High School and Marygrove College, McGowan finds time to help volunteer with a local Detroit team T.D.P (Think Detroit P.A.L.) as a coach for 5-18yr old boys and girls over the summer where she focuses on helping the youth qualify for nationals.
McGowan obtained USATF certification for coaching cross
country and track & field in 2010 and became a USATF official in 2011. A track &
field / cross runner for mid-distance and sprints allowed her to compete on
four different levels between the two sports. McGowan made four appearances on
the All-City Team and All-State Team during her successful days at De Porres
High School. She also competed in Mid-American Conference Championships while
at Bowling Green,
and was a Junior Olympian for AAU.
McGowan is the mother of a three year old son and is the daughter of Isabella McGowan and Marc Howard.
