DETROIT — The middle match of a three-game homestand would prove to be a difficult challenge for Marygrove women’s soccer (0-7-0) as they faced a rolling Mount Vernon Nazarene University Cougars (7-1-1) team Monday (Sept. 22) in Detroit. The visiting Cougars scored three goals in each half to win their seventh game in nine tries this year, taking the contest by a 6-1 final score over the Mustangs.

With the loss, the Mustangs remain winless through seven games this season with St. Mary-of-the-Woods College (Ind.) headed to Detroit for a 3:30 p.m. kick Tuesday (Sept. 23). The Mustangs defeated St. Mary-of-the-Woods last year, 3-1, thanks to a pair of goals over the game’s final six minutes.

On Monday, the Mustangs fell behind early when the Cougars’ Rachel Baker scored the first goal of an eventual hat trick to put the visitors up, 1-0. Baker would provide the assist on the next goal before the Cougars added another to race out to a 3-0 halftime lead.

Second half action saw Baker score a pair of goals in just over a minute to help lift the Cougars lead to 6-0 over the Mustangs.

In the 82nd minute, senior forward Cheyenne York (Taylor, Mich./Truman High School) would help the Mustangs avoid their fifth shutout of the season by sending in a 20-yard chip over the keeper to make the score 6-1. York’s tally – her third of the season – would be the final time the scoreboard lit up Monday as the Mustangs dropped the contest by a five-goal margin.
