WESTFIELD, Ind. — First-year head coach Ryan Kottke and Marygrove baseball fell to 1-8 on the young, inaugural season Saturday (March 14) after suffering a pair of setbacks to the host Grenadiers of Indiana University Southeast. Home games for the Grenadiers, Saturday’s twinbill was played at one of Grand Park’s turf fields in Westfield, Ind. due to winter weather still impacting the Great Lakes region.

GAME ONE – IU-SOUTHEAST 17, @MGroveBASEBALL 1
Game one of Saturday’s double-dip was unkind to the Mustangs as the host Grenadiers (8-4) won running away, 17-1. The 16-run defeat was a product of untimely errors and a hot-hitting Grenadiers squad in game one. The Mustangs had their chances early, leaving four on base as the game went into the bottom of the third a scoreless tie.

The Grenadiers broke it open in the bottom half of the third by taking advantage of two Mustang errors to post a six-run inning. The six-run frame was all the Grenadiers needed in game one as starting pitcher Kyle Rupe shut the door on the Mustangs to the tune of five innings of five-hit ball and four strikeouts.

Battling an illness, senior James Edwards (Detroit, Mich./Shaw University) made his first appearance in the Green and Gold in Saturday’s opener. Edwards went 1-for-2 at the plate, coming around to score the Mustangs only run in game one. The senior stepped to the mound in relief of fellow reliever Trey Blandford (Louisville, Ky./Fern Creek High School) in the fifth frame to toss 1 2/3 innings of two-hit ball with three strikeouts.

Freshman third baseman David Chung (Warren, Mich./Bishop Foley High School) had a well-rounded first game at the plate, going 1-for-1 with two walks.

GAME TWO – IU-SOUTHEAST 7, @MGroveBASEBALL 4
The Mustangs bounced back to put forth a resilient effort in game two despite dropping the nightcap to the Grenadiers by a narrow 7-4 final tally. Kyle Hartwick (Oxford, Mich./Rend Lake CC) gave the Mustangs their first lead of the day by opening up game two with a two-out single over the extended arm of the Grenadiers’ second baseman to score Raleigh Wilson (Macomb, Mich./West Texas College). The 1-0 lead did not last for long as the Grenadiers rattled off two runs of their own in the home half of the first to take a 2-1 lead after one inning of play.

Sophomore infielder Chase Younkin (Macomb, Mich./Culver-Stockton College) stepped to the plate in the fourth with the Mustangs down 3-1 and belted a double into left field to unload the bases. The bases-clearing double gave the Mustangs a 4-3 midway through the nightcap, but the Grenadiers had too much offense in the latter innings as they erased another Mustang lead to earn a 7-4 win.

Chung continued his big day at the plate with a 2-for-4 performance in game two. The freshman went 3-for-5 in Saturday’s doubleheader, adding a pair of walks in Saturday’s sweep.
